History and Development

The Ghanaian Academic and Research Network (GARNET) is Ghana's National Research and Education Network (NREN), established to provide advanced digital infrastructure and shared technology services for the country's higher education, research, and innovation communities. Operating as a not-for-profit organization for the collective benefit of its members, GARNET combines national connectivity, shared services, technical expertise, and strategic partnerships to strengthen collaboration across Ghana's knowledge community.

Early Vision

The origins of the Ghanaian Academic and Research Network (GARNET) can be traced back to 1995 when the idea was mooted. It only took a recognized significance in November 2006 at the end of a three-day workshop held by the Association of African Universities (AAU) in Accra to facilitate more effective integration of ICT into higher education’s core mandate of teaching, learning, research, and information management.

Establishment of GARNET

Established as a Company Limited by Guarantee on 24 August 2010, GARNET was created by the research and education community in Ghana to provide shared digital infrastructure and collaborative services that support teaching, learning, research, and innovation. Its operating philosophy is founded on the principle of shared community services—leveraging collective investment and collaboration to deliver cost-effective and value-added digital services that individual institutions may find difficult or expensive to procure independently.

2006

The Foundation

The Ghanaian Academic and Research Network (GARNET) was formally incorporated as a non-profit organization, bringing together major public universities to explore shared digital infrastructure.

2012

WACREN Integration

GARNET officially joined the West and Central African Research and Education Network (WACREN) as a founding member.

Leading Digital Transformation

Serving over 80 member institutions, GARNET provides not just bandwidth, but advanced identity management (eduroam), cloud services, and shared research repositories.
